April 19 - May 24, 2006. DREAM JOURNEY ADVENTURES AND
INTERPRETATION A six-week intensive course on Wednesday afternoons 1:45
to 3:45 at the at the University of Utah Osher Lifelong Learning Institute
for adults 50 and over.
"Dreams are wiser than we are." Robert Moss
Dreams are gifts from our source. They give us information about our
health, future, and relationships, and prepare us to make wiser life
choices. The Iroquois and other cultures believe the real world is the
dream world. Dreams are a passage from the known to the unknown, a passage
to a different reality from the little mind to the big mind. Physicist
Niels Bohr thanked his dreams when he accepted the Nobel prize.
We all dream but Western culture generally ignores the wisdom and power
in dreams. When people say "I don't dream", it just means they don't
remember their dreams. Studies show that we dream about fifteen or twenty
minutes out of every two hours. Without dreaming, we become psychotic.
Dreams provide information to help us in our daily lives, as well as
life-and-death warnings. They offer advice about the future, healing
physical and psychological problems, and health problems before symptoms
appear. During dreams, we can travel to various planes of reality and
receive spiritual guidance and creative inspiration. We can even change
our futures by re-entering dreams and changing them.
In this class we will experience exciting dream journeys, entering the
dream state and raveling to other realms while awake - in meditative
states. We will learn to use dreamgates and other techniques to embark
on fascinating dream journey adventures. In dream journeys, we can ask
for a particular dream or for specific guidance, visit a loved one,
and travel to other realms and dimensions. We can meet our guides, read
books in ancient libraries, and become other people and animals. We
can even dream for the benefit of others.
Best of all we can have fun, play, increase our creativity, and embark
on exciting inner adventures to fascinating new realms. This class will
also provide various ways of remembering and interpreting dreams based
on psychology, spirituality, and ancient shamanic wisdom. We will learn
Yoga Nidra (Yogic sleep), a state of consciousness and powerful technique
used by yogis and yoginis, Hindus, and Tibetan Buddhists, and Westerners.
We will practice conscious dreaming to become aware of our dreams while
dreaming, so we can change them during sleep. We will learn to reenter
dreams in a waking state and find the messages in nightmares.
Dream journeying has been practiced by shamans and others throughout
human history. Shamanism is the first spiritual practice known to mankind
and has continued for 30 to 40 thousand years, not just in Siberia where
it originated, but in cultures in Europe, Australia, Africa and Native
North and South America. The traditional meaning of "shaman" is "one
who dreams". Shamans play many roles: healer, doctor, priest, psychotherapist,
mystic and storyteller. Like quantum physics, shamanism teaches us that
there is an interconnection, a consciousness, that connects us life.
Everyone can benefit from shamanic wisdom and techniques. In these stressful
times, the study of shamanism is having a dramatic revival. During shamanic
journeys, we can learn the answers to personal questions, healing methods,
ways to help others, and solutions to global issues. In these challenging
times, we need to regain our individual power and access our spiritual
guidance to find solutions to our problems. We can do this through dream
journeying.
LEARNING OBJECTIVES: 1. Students will learn and experience a variety
of techniques for dream journeying, lucid dreaming (being aware while
dreaming and changing dreams), dream reentry, how to contact dream guides,
how to obtain information about health and the future through dreams,
and how to help others through dreams. 2. Students will learn about
the nature of dreams, their purpose, Native American and other ancient
dream traditions, and ways to benefit from them. 3. Students will learn
a variety of ways to remember and interpret their dreams, including
psychological, spiritual, and shamanic methods.
TEXT: Dreamgates : An Explorer's Guide to the Worlds of Soul, Imagination,
and Life Beyond Death by Robert Moss (Paperback). Robert Moss is
a renowned shamanic teacher, former professor of ancient history and
philosophy, and student of Western mystery traditions. His other books
include Conscious Dreaming: A Spiritual Path for Everyday Life,
and Dreamways of the Iroquois: Honoring the Secret Wishes of the
Soul. Handouts on various aspects of dreaming will also be provided.
As part of her training as a therapist, Lynne chose courses in dream
analysis, and recently began to study and use dream journeying. Her
experiences evolved into for a series of courses on dream journeying
and interpretation for a group that requested follow-up classes to her
meditation course. This dream course is based on research in Native
American, aboriginal, and other ancient dream traditions; my studies
in psychology (including Gestalt, Freudian, Jungian, and transpersonal
psychology); and Lynne's experiences as a psychotherapist, as well as
her own dream experiences and those of others. This is Lynne's favorite
of all the courses she's taught - so far!

April 19, 2006 - LIBRARY PRESENTATION ABOUT SEEN AND
HEARD A Century of Arab Women in Literature and Culture by Mona
N. Mikhail, 7-8:30 PM, Ogden-Weber County Library (Main Library in Ogden)
Utah. How are Arab women seen by others? How do they see themselves?
This free discussion will delve into the challenges facing Arab women,
their diverse cultures and history, their accomplishments, and progress
they have made in attaining freedom and equality, as well as threats
of repression in some countries. Learn about the origins and practice
of hijab, the veiling of Muslim women. Go beyond the stereotypes to
a clearer understanding of Arab women and their diversity. In Mikhail's
words: "In the wake of wars and conflicts that have spilled into the
21st century, Arab women are busy mourning, trying to save the wounded,
and fighting waves of religious fanaticism that threaten to dislodge
their hard won gains in the 20th Century. My hope is that these studies
capture the discourses of both male and female feminist writings and
bring to the fore possibilities of transformation that could alter the
threats of cultural forms of repression that lurk in the wake of these
repeated conflicts and wars." Copies of Seen and Heard are available
at the Ogden Library. For more info, call 801-337-2632.

May 11, 2007 - Friday 2:20 to 4 PM - OVERCOMING PAIN
USING POWERFUL MENTAL AND SPIRITUAL METHODS, a workshop as part of the
Fourth Annual Integrative Health Conference on Overcoming Pain Using
Powerful Mental and Spiritual Methods, at the Marriott University Park
Hotel, near the University of Utah. This is an experiential workshop
where participants try various pain relief techniques, including Vipassana
and Zen meditations. Some techniques can be done in minutes for immediate
pain relief. Others require more time in order to uncover the root causes,
but results can be permanent and life-changing. Mental and spiritual
techniques are being used by doctors and are being taught in medical
school. This presentation is based on more than two decades of psychological,
medical, and spiritual research. We discuss the causes of pain, the
effects of placebos and nocebos, and how our minds work and affect our
biochemistry. We also briefly cover studies showing that psychological
and spiritual techniques are as effective as drugs in relieving depression
and the most common types of pain. Participants experience an exercise
demonstrating how changes in thoughts and emotions affect our mental
states and sensations of pain. We cover studies about placebos and nocebos
demonstrating that thoughts and beliefs have powerful effects on pain
and health. We briefly cover psychological and neurobiological discoveries
about how our minds work, and how trauma, emotions, and self-defeating
beliefs can cause pain and disease. You will also experience a unique
guided meditation for permanent pain relief, combining all elements
for effective pain relief: instructing the subconscious to eliminate
the pain; sending energy to the affected area by focusing on it; dis-identifying
with pain by mentally removing it from the body; uncovering the cause
of the pain; changing beliefs and behavior; and visualizing the pain
disappearing. If time permits, we will discuss recent discoveries in
quantum physics that shed light on energy and consciousness and how
we create our reality. We conclude with a yogi/Buddhist spiritual technique
for transcending suffering through Self-realization. The fee for this
workshop is $25.
More than twenty respected health care professionals
will be speaking on Thursday and Friday from 9 AM to 4 PM. This year's
Integrative Health Conference covers three fascinating topics: Body,
Mind, Spirit Modalities: Science and Experience, New Understandings

Books to be discussed are:
September 11 - Left to Tell - Discovering God Amidst
the Rwandan Holocaust by Immaculée Ilibagiza. The powerful and
inspiring autobiography of a woman who survived for three months with
seven other women in a three by four-foot bathroom while hundreds of
killers hunted for them. Her family was brutally murdered during a genocide
that claimed the lives of almost a million Rwandans. She discovered
the power of prayer and the meaning of unconditional love, eventually
shedding her fear of death and achieving the peace of forgiveness.
October 9- Autobiography of a Yogi by Paramahansa
Yogananda. A recognized saint takes us into the world of yogis, enlightenment,
meditation, and miracles. He reveals his experiences with other saints
(Therese Neumann), poets (Nobel laureate Tagore), and world leaders
(Mahatma Gandhi and President Wilson). "Yoga" means "union with the
divine" and is an ancient science, not a religion. With candor and humor,
Yogananda shares details of his remarkable childhood, training with
a yoga master, and thirty years of teaching in America. He discloses
his human foibles and emotions, showing us that everyone, regardless
of religion, can realize our oneness with the divine and become yogis
or yoginis.
November 13 - The Universe in a Single Atom - The Convergence
of Science and Spirituality by the Dalai Lama. After forty years
of study with some of the greatest scientific minds, and a lifetime
of meditative, spiritual, and philosophic study, the Dalai Lama analyzes
why scientific as well as spiritual inquiries must be pursued to arrive
at a complete picture of the truth. Examining Darwinism and karma, quantum
mechanics and philosophical insight into the nature of reality, neurobiology
and consciousness, the Dalai Lama draws parallels between contemplative
and scientific views of reality and provides a vision of the world where
various approaches to understanding ourselves, our universe, and one
another can be brought together in the service of humanity and alleviate
human suffering.
